The Island of Salt
For centuries, Formentera was mainly known for its salt flats. Salt extraction was not only the economic engine, but it shaped the landscape we see today in the Ses Salines Natural Park. It was a hard life, marked by isolation and self-sufficiency.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the island was left unpopulated due to constant pirate attacks, becoming a temporary refuge until the defense towers that still border the coast today allowed a safe return.
The Legacy of Freedom
In the 60s and 70s, Formentera became a myth for the hippie generation. Figures like Bob Dylan or Pink Floyd sought in these lands the peace and disconnection that the modern world denied them. That spirit of freedom and respect for nature is still the soul of the island.
Living in Can Xumeu Carlos is connecting with that authentic Formentera, where time seems to stand still under the Mediterranean sun.
